Google officially releases Android 9 Pie for Pixel and Nexus devices

If you ever guessed what the ‘P’ in Android P stands for, it’s finally been revealed by Google as Pie. Android 9 Pie is the successor to the Android Oreo Operating System.

Google says Android Pie comes with a “heaping helping of artificial intelligence baked in to make your phone smarter, simpler, and more tailored to you.”

A few stunning features of Google’s Android 9 Pie

Google’s latest flavor of Android is jam-packed with all sorts of new features, including a brand-new gesture navigation system, new UI elements, and a heap of under-the-hood tweaks that aim to make this the best version of Android to date.

1. AI-Powered Adaptive Battery

Similar to how Adaptive Brightness automatically adjusts your display’s brightness level based on your environment and usage, Adaptive Battery will examine how you use your phone and limit CPU usage to apps you infrequently use.

Android 9 Pie introduces a new feature called “Adaptive Battery,” which uses machine learning to learn which apps you use most and prioritize battery for them accordingly.

According to Google, Adaptive Battery can lower CPU usage by as much as 30%, and thanks to the use of Machine Learning, it’ll only get better the more you use your phone.

2. Completely different UI Navigation  System

Android 9 Pie has eliminated the Android’s iconic three-button navigation system — Back, Home, and Recents, which were first introduced in Android 3.0 Honeycomb. These have been replaced with gesture-based navigation.

Some gestures for navigating the Android Pie’s UI are; swipe up to access recent apps page, Swipe up twice or do a long swipe for the app drawer, The Back button only appears in certain apps/menus when it’s needed.

These taps and swipes can be a bit confusing at first, but after enough practice they can be easily mastered. For now, these new gestures can be turned off to revert to the old three-button navigation. However, going forward it may not be possible in future updated to revert to the old navigation style. Which means users must get acquainted with the new gesture-based navigation sooner or later.

3. Slices

This is an important feature added to Android 9 Pie which allows apps to shows a “slice” of relevant information from other apps when the operating system believes you need it.

Slices allow you to perform more complex actions from the Assistant or Google Search. For example, If you type Uber into Google Search, you’ll see a “slice” of the Uber app, showing prices for your ride home and the ETA for a driver so you can take action more quickly and easily, provided you have the app installed.

4. 157 New Emojis
